Southampton’s goal scorer at St James’ Park, Ché Adams urged Saints to use their second-half performance in the North East as a building block for upcoming fixtures.

Despite the disappointment of a Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Newcastle, the Scotland international was quick to use Tuesday evening’s clash as motivation for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Brentford.

“Deflated. We thought we had a chance coming here,” admitted the Saints forward. “Only one nil but we let the game go too early on with two easy goals, two cheap goals we conceded.

“We started the second half much better and we started playing football a lot more. We have to build on that now and take it into Saturday.

“It’s always hard to come here to St James’ Park, it’s even more difficult to go two goals behind so early on, it’s a massive mountain to climb.

“We didn’t put ourselves in the best frame of mind from early, but we keep going now and build off the second half.

“We have to build on that. We were much better when we went to a four, just a bit more options, a bit more fluidity in terms of attacking."

It was Adams’s sublime strike that kept Saints in with a chance in the North East, finding the net from 25-yards-out to provide a lifeline shortly before the half-hour mark.

“It’s obviously nice but we didn’t get the win in the end. Personally it’s nice to score again after a long time and try to help the team which unfortunately it wasn’t to be.”

While a proud moment on a personal level, the forward was keen to highlight the importance of unity within the Saints squad as they head into a busy and important period of the season.

“We’ve got to be positive. We need to start picking up wins in the Premier League now and that’s what all the boys have said: We need to dig in now and everyone needs to be in this together because it’s only us that’s going to get out of it.

“Everyone is positive moving into the weekend and that’s all we can do.”
