WHAT’S AT STAKE?
Newcastle remain unbeaten at home in the Premier League this season and will be wanting to replicate that form in a decisive Carabao Cup match at St James’ Park.
Holding a one goal advantage heading into the second leg, the hosts have the edge ahead of a huge clash on Tyneside.
While league form has been a point of contention for Saints, their performances in the cup have given Saints fans a whole lot to cheer about in recent weeks.
Emerging 2-1 victors over Championship side Blackpool at the weekend, Nathan Jones’s side will be hoping to build on that momentum up North.
TEAM NEWS
Emil Krafth and Matt Targett are the only players ruled out through injury for Tuesday’s clash, while Eddie Howe will be without Jonjo Shelvey who looks set to join Nottingham Forest before the transfer window closes.
Newcastle’s recent signing Anthony Gordon is also ruled out of the clash due to being cup tied.
Theo Walcott and Armel Bella-Kotchap marked their return from injury at the weekend against Blackpool and could find themselves in the squad on Tuesday night.
Duje Ćaleta-Car returns from his one match suspension while Saints’ latest January acquisition James Bree could be included in the matchday squad for the first time.
THE MANAGERS
Eddie Howe: “I've drilled this into the players: 'This game is by no means over. This tie is not over.' It's very much in the balance. We're going to need a top performance and we're going to need the crowd with us from minute one until the end.”
Nathan Jones: “What we have to do is be the best versions of ourselves. That's what we know we have to do we have to have a game plan we have to be good and we have to execute it.”
ONES TO WATCH
Alekander Isak: As Isak looks to regain his form after returning from injury, the Swede was the gamechanger at St Mary’s, coming off the bench to provide a wonderful assist for Joelinton’s goal.
Romain Perraud: A stunning performance at the weekend against Blackpool could have earned the Frenchman a place in the starting XI for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie.
