Ralph Hasenhüttl has confirmed that goalkeeper Alex McCarthy will miss Monday night's game against Liverpool after receiving a positive COVID-19 test this week.

McCarthy, who is the only player within Hasenhüttl's squad to have returned a positive result, is currently self-isolating at home, in line with government guidelines and club protocols.

Hasenhüttl said: "After the last round of tests, we have one positive case now with Alex McCarthy, so he's out for the game on Monday and maybe also the Shrewsbury game, as he has to self-isolate for a period.

"Otherwise, we will have a look. We have a few problems with injuries, and we must have a look at who is available."

With McCarthy unavailable, Hasenhüttl is set to hand Fraser Forster a first appearance of the season when Liverpool visit St Mary's, and the Saints boss is happy to have such an option available to step in.

"I think Fraser is a very good alternative," he said. "He really wants to play now and was waiting for his chance.

"He has made a good development and, against a strong opponent, to make the debut of the season is not the worst for a goalkeeper I think, because you can immediately show up. I'm happy that he's here and we have this alternative."
