Dave Horseman’s side will be looking to put their Premier League 2 defeat to Chelsea behind them on Tuesday, as their EFL Trophy adventure begins for the 2020/21 campaign.

Saints struggled in the competition last time out, losing all three of their Group D games against the likes of Walsall, Coventry City and Forest Green Rovers.

Their opponents this week, Stevenage, fared slightly better in last year’s competition; finishing second in Group G with five points and making it all the way to the quarter-finals where they lost to Exeter City.

Alex Revell’s side have enjoyed an unbeaten start to their League Two campaign, drawing 1-1 at newcomers Barrow on the opening day, before winning 3-0 at home over Oldham Athletic on Saturday.

A meeting between Saints and Stevenage is something of a rarity as far as the history books are concerned.

The only meeting between the two sides came back in August 2012, when Saints came away from the Lamex Stadium with a 4-1 League Cup second round win over their hosts.

Second half goals from Tadanari Lee, Billy Sharp, Jason Puncheon and Ben Reeves secured their place in the third round that afternoon.

The Nigel Adkins led Saints side featured the likes of Luke Shaw, Paolo Gazzaniga and current captain James Ward-Prowse, with the likes of Jack Stephens and Callum Chambers occupying the substitutes bench.

Horseman will be relieved to have a fixture so soon after Friday night’s disappointing defeat to Chelsea in PL2, but the manager believes there were still plus points to take into account despite the result.

“We have looked to address some issues from Friday night with and without the ball,” he said. “But still we thought there was lots of positives to take away from the game.”

“Stevenage will be really tough opposition. They had a good result at the weekend so will be ready for Tuesday’s game.

“The EFL Trophy is a good experience for the boys, and we have good competition for places at the moment amongst the squad.”
