HOW TO WATCH

All three of Saints’ Premier League fixtures in September will be broadcast live in the UK, with the opening day trip to Palace shown live on BT Sport.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Whilst nothing is won or lost in the context of the season on the opening day, there is the opportunity to get an early three points on the board and build some early momentum.

Losing just one of their final nine matches of the 2019/20 campaign, Saints will be looking to carry on where they left off, buoyed by the fact they’ve won their last three trips to Selhurst Park.

Both sides took until matchday three to register their first victories last season and will be determined to start the new campaign in more convincing style.

TEAM NEWS

Returning from international duty with a quad injury, Ralph Hasenhüttl will be unable to call upon the services of Stuart Armstrong in the capital.

Also unlikely to feature is summer signing Mohammed Salisu who, after only recently joining the team for pre-season training, is still improving his fitness. Otherwise, the Saints boss has a full squad to choose from.

For Palace, new signing Eberechi Eze is a doubt despite returning to training following a groin injury, with Nathan Ferguson also facing a fitness test.

However, striker Michy Batshuayi could start after rejoining the club for a second loan spell from Chelsea on Thursday night.

THE MANAGERS

Ralph Hasenhüttl: “They are a team that aren’t easy to play against as they have an organised defence. We go there with the knowledge of the 2-0 win last season but it’s a different challenge now, so if we don’t turn up we have no chance.

“We have new shirts now but the rest should stay the same. Hopefully we can show up again and be a team that takes points on the road.”

Roy Hodgson: “Southampton were probably the form team at the end of last season and have had a good pre-season.

"They'll be just as excited about the start of the season as us, but that's what the Premier League is all about.”

ONES TO WATCH

Michy Batshuayi: Becoming a popular figure amongst the Palace fans from his first loan stint with the club in 2018/19, the Belgium international will be hoping to find similar form to that which saw him net six goals in 13 appearances.

With goals missing from the Eagles’ line-up last term, the 26-year-old will be the one tasked with finding the back of the net on a regular basis.

Danny Ings: Fresh from winning a first England cap in five years last week, Saints’ number nine will be looking to replicate the form found in 2019/20.

Ending the campaign with 22 Premier League goals, 12 of those came away from home and Ings will be looking to get off the mark early this time around.
