Ralph Hasenhüttl admitted Southampton did not deserve anything from the game after falling to a 2-1 defeat against Burnley at St Mary’s.

The visitors profited from a bizarre opener in blustery conditions, as Ashley Westwood’s second-minute corner sailed in completely untouched.

Back came Saints, who were without the injured Nathan Redmond, as Danny Ings struck a fine equaliser against his former club, but substitute Matej Vydra won the game for the Clarets with a well-taken goal on the hour mark.

“We know this is a difficult opponent, especially if you are one down after two minutes from a set-piece,” Hasenhüttl said.

“It’s not possible to concede a goal like this. But I think we showed a good reaction afterwards, we came back with a good equaliser.

“We played some good balls in the first half and tried to give them a little bit of pressure, but it’s not easy – they are very well-organised, aggressive against the ball and never give you a chance to win the ball because they immediately play long.

“Everybody knows how they play, but they do it well and they did it well today. It’s always nasty to play against, but we knew this.

“We got the equaliser and spoke at half time about leaving everything on the pitch in the second half.

“Even then, you could see it wasn’t easy to keep them in their half. We conceded the goals too easily and losing the game was deserved.”

A difficult afternoon was compounded by the news that Redmond has picked up a groin injury, while Sofiane Boufal hobbled off in the first half.

"Hopefully only one month out, but maybe longer," added Hasenhüttl on Redmond. "We now have two 10s left, but no moaning about it – they are always demanding to play and now they can play, and they have to show up."
