Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl was buoyed by his side’s performance against table-topping Liverpool at Anfield, despite falling to defeat.

Saints enjoyed the better of a goalless first-half before a turned down penalty claim saw the pendulum of momentum swing in favour of the hosts, who went on to convert four goals.

Bringing an end to Southampton’s run of four consecutive wins on the road, Hasenhüttl was left to reflect on a bright performance on Merseyside.

“Everybody who was at the game today saw a very brave Saints squad and I would like to see this game again if we score the first goal.

“Especially after half-time, it was a clear penalty but once they scored at the other end it turned the tables and they went on the front foot and then it was difficult to defend but we still tried to create chances.

if the best team in the world has 50 minutes with no idea what they should do and no chances, then this gives you a massive lift.

Victory sees Liverpool extend their advantage at the top to 22 points whilst Saints remain in the middle of the pack.

Despite spurning chances to end the hosts' unbeaten run, Hasenhüttl was still left in a positive mood when summarising recent improvement.

“You need to be clinical, but we were a bit hectic in the finish and a bit unlucky when Ingsy hit Longy’s heel, maybe that could’ve been a goal.

“I think for everybody it was fantastic to see that we can compete against such a team. It was a fantastic signal of how good we are and how it can go and how we can win.”
