Marieanne Spacey-Cale has promised her side will put into practise what they’ve learnt, following defeat to Coventry United in the Women’s FA Cup.

Saints fell foul to a second-half flurry of goals for the visitors, who sit two divisions above them in the Championship, on their St Mary’s debut.

Rachel Panting scored a stunner in stoppage time for Saints but it only came as a consolation during the 4-1 defeat.

It’s the side’s first defeat of the season in all competitions, something manager Spacey-Cale has said her side will learn from.

“We’re disappointed it was 4-1,” commented Spacey-Cale. “We felt we deserved a lot more. But within the disappointment there’s pride.

“Pride at the players at the effort they’ve put in against a team two leagues above us, who’ve got that little bit of nous, that little bit of experience.”

We'll learn, we'll regroup, and try and put into practise what we've learnt for the rest of the season."

Saints played their first game at St Mary’s in front of a crowd of 4,150, something Spacey-Cale noted lifted her side during the 90 minutes.

“The crowd behind us today was enormous for the players. The supporters have been fantastic all the way leading up into the game.

“To score, it just gave them a real lift and an encouragement that the girls never game up.

“I’m just really pleased we gave the crowd a performance to ensure that, hopefully, we’ve won over a lot of new fans who will come back to AFC Totton when we play there.”

Southampton Women's are back in action on Wedneday in the semi-final of the Hampshire Senior Cup.

Their next outing at AFC Totton is the visit of Swindon in the National League on 9th February.
