Ralph Hasenhüttl reflected on a good test for his Southampton side after they ran out 3-1 winners against Feyenoord at De Kuip on Sunday afternoon.

Che Adams continued his pre-season record of scoring in every game he’s featured in so far, with further strikes from Maya Yoshida and Sofiane Boufal sealing another success.

And the Saints boss was satisfied by what he saw, with a number of players getting game time ahead of the Premier League opener against Burnley in two weeks time.

“It was exactly the test I expected. It showed us where we have improved very well, but it also showed us where we still have weaknesses in our game,” Hasenhüttl began.

“Not every player is on the same level in the moment, which is also normal because not everyone started at the same time.

“We have another two weeks and it was a good test, a very good test and again I tried to give everybody the chance to play. It was important the impressions I have got today.”

After going into the break with a 2-1 lead, with Adams’ sixth-minute strike and Yoshida’s finish after James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick was blocked punctuated by Orkun Kokcu’s goal, Hasenhüttl made 10 changes at the interval.

He added: “I think the pressing was very good in the first-half. We won a lot of balls and they (Feyenoord) gave us the chance to do so.

“On the other hand, we gave a few chances away because deep defending and long balls we didn’t defend very well.

“Finally, two good goals. We could have scored more often because we had a lot of chances in the first-half.

“Second-half it was a different shape with the younger guys. I think what they can show they showed me. We haven’t been as dominant as in the first-half sometimes but it was a good test, I saw a lot of good things and a few bad things which is ok.”
