Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has called on Saints to ensure that Sunday’s stunning 3-2 win over Arsenal becomes just beginning of a drive upwards from the relegation zone in the Premier League.
A brace for the returning Danny Ings and a late winner from substitute Charlie Austin saw the home side reclaim the lead on three separate occasions and the skipper is keen to see that same resilience and hard work carried forward into the rest of the festive period.
“Hopefully we can use this as a springboard,” he said. “We have to stay focused and realistic but use the confidence from the positive moments from this game because we played very well. We scored three goals against one of the best teams in the league so it’s a really big result.
“We can not get carried away, we have to stay strong and keep building and it all starts tomorrow again in training. We need to take the confidence with us and believe we can win the next game as well.”
The noise inside St Mary’s was deafening on the final whistle but it had been at similar levels throughout the afternoon, a vocal support that Højbjerg believes was critical for the team in securing the result.
“I’m proud and honoured to be a part of this game because a win at home against Arsenal in a moment like this with the difficulties of the relegation zone and to be produce a result like this, it is a big boost to get out.
“We really felt the fans’ support today. I have to be honest, through the whole season I need to say that they have always been there and we, the players, we feel that and we want to fight for that.
“Most importantly we want to fight for the club because we want to take the club to the next level. Congratulations to everybody, the fans, the coach and the players because the performance today was special.”
