Under-23s coach Radhi Jaïdi has heaped praise on his youngsters after they were able to hold twice International Cup champions Porto to a 1-1 draw at Staplewood.

Saints gained the lead through Marcus Barnes, who took his tally to five for the season, before being pegged back from the penalty spot by Portuguese forward Rui Sousa eight minutes later.

But, given the visitor's international pedigree, Jaïdi was pleased with what he saw from his young side, not least goalscorer Barnes, who has this season added both goals and maturity to his performances.

"I think it was a big statement from our boys," Jaïdi began.

"Really positive performance. Reflecting on the game, I think we're happy with the way we managed it and how we managed the opposition.

"Bare in mind, this Porto side are tougher than what we'd usually face in Premier League 2.

"Overall I thought it was a tremendous performance, I'm really pleased.

"Marcus [Barnes] has come back this season a different player. He's matured over the summer.

"He works hard and he's a clever boy, he knows what's required of him and we're seeing that.

"He helps his teammates and it's taking him to a different level. His impact is really positive."
