Bertrand: Unity will serve us well

The skipper expressed his disappointment at the manner of the goals Saints conceded in defeat at Liverpool yesterday, but insists it has been a positive start to the new campaign.

Bertrand pointed to the unwavering support from the travelling fans at Anfield for reason to believe the club can bounce back quickly after a first defeat in four games.

“I think overall, bar the late goal we conceded in the last game (against Brighton), it’s been a positive start,” he said.

“We’ve got the feel-good factor, everyone is together and we’re looking forward to the games.

“One thing we can feel this year is that unity. You see those fans who have travelled up, and there was one point in the second half where they (Liverpool) had a spell of possession, but all you could hear was the Southampton fans roaring and singing.

“That gives us that feeling, and it’s something we know the club has got. That was great, but unfortunately we couldn’t get the result for them today. We’ll put that right next week.

“We’re here to play games, we want them to come thick and fast, and hopefully we can go on a good run.”
