Southampton captain Ryan Bertrand expressed his disappointment at the way Saints conceded goals too easily in the defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

The visitors found themselves 3-0 down by half time against a team who have now won their first six games of the new Premier League season.

As a consequence, the second half was somewhat uneventful, and Bertrand was more encouraged by aspects of the first period – just not the soft goals from which the hosts profited.

“It’s disappointing. We’ve lost the game, but we’ve given them three goals,” he said.

“When you come to places like this, it’s always tough. You can’t give them anything.

“It’s a difficult one because, as a team, I actually thought in the first half we were in the balance, and created some good stuff down the left-hand side and down the right-hand side.

“The boys were controlling the midfield well, but we can’t just give them three goals, because that’s given us a mountain to climb.

“It’s important we go back to the training ground and eradicate that for the next game.

‘You look at the second half and we didn’t concede – we showed character, which is good, but we played better in the first half and conceded three. That’s frustrating, but we’ll keep going.”
