Hughes: We deserved more

Mark Hughes felt his Southampton side merited much more from their 2-1 defeat to Leicester City in the Premier League.

After dominating large parts of the game, Demarai Gray levelled after Ryan Bertrand’s rocket had given Saints a deserved lead.

But as the hosts pushed for a winner, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg was dismissed for a second bookable offence before a last-gasp Harry Maguire goal settled things.

“I thought we were excellent today. We came into the game with an aim to be really on the front foot and show intensity and endeavour and affect the opposition with our determination to set a marker in the game,” Hughes reflected.

“Obviously the sending off has hurt and damaged us but until that point we were excellent in terms of what we talked about trying to do.

“It was a great performance but moments in games and in sport will conspire against you and the sending off is a hard blow to take at that point so we had to reorganise some of the guys who were having a good impact on the game.

“It’s hard to take. If they were honest Leicester, I think they would feel they have been very fortunate to take three points today. They will know they’ve gone up against a good team.”

“The winning goal is a frustration for everyone. We’re not quite sure how it has managed to go in from that distance. When he is shaping to shoot, I’m thinking ‘well go ahead because it’s not going to bother us, it’s too far out’ but somehow it finds the bottom corner.

“We’ve lost a game that for the most part we were very dominant in.”
