Stuart Armstrong was delighted to play such a key role in Southampton’s second-half comeback, as the Scot celebrated his home debut with a goal in the win over Celta Vigo.

Saints trailed 2-0 at the interval, but responded quickly through Charlie Austin’s header, before Armstrong latched on to Matt Targett’s pass to equalise on the hour.

Mark Hughes’s men then went one better in the final minute, as Mohamed Elyounoussi pounced to win the game after James Ward-Prowse’s low shot struck the post.

“In the first half, we created a good number of chances and maybe should’ve taken one or two of them,” Armstrong said.

“Obviously we were disappointed with the way we conceded goals, but I think it shows good character for the team to come back and win 3-2, and build towards the start of the season.

“I always want to add goals, and getting one tonight was a nice bonus, especially at home in my first game in front of the fans.

“That was nice, but overall it was just nice to be part of a winning team.

Armstrong, who arrived from Celtic at the end of June, reflected on a busy start to his Saints career and paid tribute to his new employers for the warm welcome.

“We’ve been travelling a fair bit,” he added. “Obviously we had two weeks in China, then we were back for a few days, and then away again to France, so it’s been pretty hectic since I came down here.

“But it’s all good things, all different experiences and another good one tonight, so things have been good.

“Everyone’s been great with me. There’s a lot of organisation in coming down here and making sure everything else goes smoothly outside the training ground, so credit to the club for making that transition as smooth as possible.”
