Mauricio Pellegrino believes Southampton deserved more after being held to a goalless draw by Stoke at St Mary’s.

The manager admitted his team were not sharp enough in the first half, but responded by producing a dominant display after the interval.

Despite creating a host of chances, Saints could not make the breakthrough.

“Obviously we are disappointed, because in the second half we did everything to try and win the game,” said the boss.

“Sometimes the opponent was fresher in the first half. They were really aggressive and we couldn’t find spaces to move the ball quicker.

“Everybody realised that we had to play one step forward in all different aspects – in attack, in defence and in transition.

“We had to react better and I think we did, but to learn for the future we have to do that from the beginning.

“In the second half, I think we created some clear chances, but in the Premier League every game is difficult and football is about efficiency, not what you deserve.

“You can talk about many reasons, but the reality is we couldn’t win.”
