Under-18s coach Danny Butterfield was pleased that his young side were able to show a willingness to overcome Tuesday night's FA Youth Cup disappointment, by claiming a hard-fought victory over Fulham at Staplewood.

Despite a tiresome 120 minutes midweek, Butterfield's side were confident in possession, outplayed their West London counterparts for the majority, and remained resolute defensively to earn yet another clean sheet.

The victory extends their unbeaten league form to five games, a run stretching back to mid-October, while Saints' footing in the table has also profited - having climbed to third with those valuable three points.

"I think the lads performed well," Butterfield reflected. "On the back of a disappointing Youth Cup exit midweek, the reaction from the players was good. They showed commitment out of possession and quality when we had the ball.

"Great response from the boys and we're pleased with them. For their development, a winning mentality is vitally important. For them to progress to the first-team it is certainly needed, so it is a record we're proud of as a group. Long may it continue.

"They need to overcome obstacles, such as the loss in the week, to become better players. They need to react mentally and gain a toughness inside yourself, to react to adversity. They've showed that today.

"The scoreline could have been more, but another positive result and a clean sheet is certainly a good thing."
