Southampton's young charges were the first side in three months to thwart Monday night's opposition, Blackburn, while ending their consecutive ten-match unbeaten streak.

A goal either side of half-time secured the victory, with strikes from Yan Valery and Matt Targett, and Radhi Jaïdi was particularly delighted with his side's ability to shut out Blackburn, who had previously averaged three goals a game.

"Logic, and that's what we wanted today, the victory and the three points." Jaïdi began. "We're top of the group, I know the competition is ongoing but we want to go as far as possible and we're in a good position now.

"We defended well today, and I'm very happy with that aspect, the clean sheet. We defended set-plays particularly well. They had pace up front and we dealt well with that."

Saints' defensive resilience was typified by captain Alfie Jones, who made a series of goal-saving challenges and blocks, while Jaïdi's side also secured top spot in their Premier League Cup group standings, leapfrogging Blackburn.

"There is a little improvement in terms of managing the game," he added. "However we still could have done better in certain situations, there is still learning to be done there.

"I'm happy to be the first to beat Blackburn in 10 games, and stop that run. We deserved to win today, the boys worked really hard. We showed we're able to compete and win against tough opposition, and keep clean sheets."
