As Southampton prepare to embark on their busiest month of the season, Mauricio Pellegrino has been encouraged by the depth he has seen in his squad during recent games.

Saints face seven Premier League matches during December, beginning with today's trip to AFC Bournemouth.

Pellegrino has used a variety of players over the past week particularly, for the games against Everton and Manchester City, in which his side produced two excellent performances.

The Saints boss was delighted with that, especially as he knows he may need to call on a wide range of players over the coming weeks.

"It's really important for me, because when you have got this competitive spirit inside the squad all of them feel they can play and are really motivated," he said.

"I feel now most of them are ready and training really well. Ok, sometimes you get some injuries, like with Cédric the other day, but when the spirit in the squad during the week is good we can trust in our squad and it's really good news for us."

Pellegrino added: "The last two games I think even changing the players, even changing the shape, even changing the organisation in different styles of games, we have competed really, really well.

"To be competitive I repeat is something that is not easy to do. It's the most important thing as a team and for me.

"It's one of my goals in this club to be competitive, to show our character and our spirit because, for me, this is the base of every single organisation."
