Mauricio Pellegrino hailed the character of his Southampton side after they took a point in the 1-1 draw with AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Ryan Fraser put the hosts ahead shortly before half-time, but Saints emerged the more purposeful and carried the most threat in a second-half which saw Charlie Austin net his third goal in a week.

“I think the game was really tight because both teams were trying to win from the beginning until the end,” Pellegrino reflected.

“At the end of the first-half, maybe they were a little bit better than us after they scored but our reaction in the second-half was positive.

“Our attitude and our football was better and after we equalised both teams tried to win it.”

The result capped a busy week for Pellegrino’s men, having faced Everton and Manchester City.

And the boss was pleased with how his side showed their versatility to three differing encounters.

He added: “I think it was positive in our performances. The three games were all a little bit different but some of them, we played in different ways.

“I think the good thing is we adapted to different circumstances and now we have to look forward.”
