Maya Yoshida helped Japan book their place at the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia, as they defeated Australia 2-0 at home.

Takumo Asano converted from Yuto Nagatomo’s left-wing cross on 41 minutes to open the scoring.

And with seven minutes to go, Yosuke Ideguchi made sure of all three points in Group B.

Yoshida played the duration as they stood firm to see the game out and make it their sixth consecutive World Cup qualification, with one game to spare.

They face Saudi Arabia next on Tuesday 5th September, with kick-off scheduled for 6.30pm BST.
