Southampton’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season continued, as they took a point home from their trip to Huddersfield.

Following the opening-day draw at home to Swansea and the 3-2 win over West Ham at St Mary’s, Saints went on the road for the first time this season and battled out a 0-0 draw with the Terriers.

Huddersfield had come into this game flying, with two wins from two for the newly-promoted club, but Mauricio Pellegrino’s side were able to halt some of their momentum.

Pellegrino named an unchanged XI from the side that beat West Ham 3-2 last weekend, with new signing Wesley Hoedt earning a place among the substitutes.

Saints created the first big opportunity of the afternoon as a superb Steven Davis pass released Nathan Redmond down the inside-left.

He charged down on goal, but bent his low shot just wide of the far post, as Terriers keeper Jonas Lössl came out to narrow the angle.

Davis was proving an extremely influential presence, and he nearly got in on goal himself, as Dušan Tadić’s cleverly-weighted pass picked out his run in behind, only for Chris Löwe to make a superb saving tackle.

At the other end, Maya Yoshida had to make a crucial intervention to deny Elias Kachunga, as he got onto a low cross six yards out, before Fraser Forster did brilliantly to reach a dangerous cross just ahead of Steve Mounié.

Having been a threat at one end, Davis then had to play an important role at the other in the 23rd minute, as Kachunga’s cutback found Rajiv van La Parra in space 16 yards out. His low shot was heading for the bottom corner, but the Saints midfielder stuck out a leg to divert it clear.

The Terriers were beginning to threaten more by this stage, and Mounié saw a shot bobble just wide after 31 minutes, before Forster had to fling himself to his right shortly afterwards to make a fine stop from Tom Ince, flicking his angled shot from the corner of the area just wide of the far post.

Forster had to make another good stop with five minutes of the half left, having spilled Löwe’s left-wing cross straight into the path of Kachunga, redeeming himself by turning away the Terriers player’s first-time shot.

The last action of the first half saw Oriol Romeu booked for an aerial challenge on Zanka, as the sides went in level at the break.

Saints carved out the first opening after the restart, as Mario Lemina worked the ball to Manolo Gabbiadini 20 yards out, but his low shot was straight at Lössl in goal.

Mounié then headed over for the hosts at the other end, but opportunities were proving a little harder to come by in the second half for both sides.

In a bid to change that, Pellegrino made his first change on 64 minutes, as Lemina was withdrawn and Shane Long was thrown on in his place.

Shortly after, the Saints boss made another switch, as James Ward-Prowse entered the fray in place of Gabbiadini, while his final change saw Sam McQueen replace Tadić.

Ward-Prowse had an appeal for a penalty turned down in the 81st minute, as he cut back past Zanka inside the area, but his claims of a trip were denied by referee Stuart Attwell.

Long then created an opening for Redmond, finding him in space on the edge of the area but Lössl was equal to his curling shot, pushing it away to safety, as Saints began to apply some late pressure.

Bertrand nearly then won it in the last minute, as he stole in at the back post to meet Long's looping cross, but his header back across goal was cleared off the line by the covering Tommy Smith.
