Mauricio Pellegrino will make a decision tomorrow on whether new signing Wesley Hoedt can feature at Huddersfield Town.
Saints make the trip to the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday, in what is their first away game of the Premier League season.
Dutch international centre-back Hoedt only arrived at the club on Tuesday, joining from Lazio on a five-year deal, and will be assessed tomorrow as to whether he travels this weekend.
"Wesley is a young player, a young international, that can help us to be stronger in defence, and that is left footed,” said Pellegrino.
"He’s a profile of player we don’t have and can hopefully settle as quick as possible with rest of the team to be available and we will decide tomorrow if we can include him in the squad."
