Mauricio Pellegrino was heartened by the support of Southampton's fans as he experienced his first Premier League game in charge of the side at St Mary's.

The new Saints boss took charge of his first competitive home game, as the 2017/18 season got under way with a 0-0 draw against Swansea City.

While it wasn't the result the side had ideally wanted to give the fans, Pellegrino was pleased with the atmosphere, both on and off the pitch, and hopes it will lead to better things when Saints host West Ham next Saturday.

"The people were really good, the stadium was full, they were pushing us," he said.

"Our fans were behind the team and I think we did everything. We are responsible to give everything to try to make the people happy and we will wait for next week if we can win and score a couple of goals."

Saints certainly created plenty of chances against Swansea, taking 29 shots during the course of the game, but the disappointment was that they couldn't turn any of them into a goal.

"We found spaces in wide areas, between the midfielders and centre-backs – we did some combinations really well, but in football, I repeat, you have to put the ball inside [the net]," said Pellegrino.
