Harrison Reed turned in a strong performance on his competitive debut for loan club Norwich City, as the Canaries earned a 1-1 draw at Fulham to open the Championship season.
The Saints midfielder, who is spending the season at Carrow Road, started for Daniel Farke’s men, who grabbed a point thanks to Nelson Oliveira’s late goal.
Russell Martin’s first-half own-goal had given the home side the lead, but Wes Hoolahan, who had come on for Reed with ten minutes remaining, produced an excellent delivery with the clock running down to pick out Oliveira to equalise.
It was also a good day for Southampton keeper Harry Lewis, who helped Dundee United to a 1-0 victory at Inverness Caledonian Thistle on the opening day of the Scottish Championship season.
The 19-year-old has already enjoyed a fine start to life at Tannadice, helping United top their Scottish League Cup group, with the highlight of that being his penalty shootout heroics against fierce rivals Dundee.
His excellent individual form continued into the start of the league campaign, making good stops either side of Paul McMullan’s first-half penalty, first from George Oakley’s angled strike and then Joe Chalmers’ low shot, in what was a faultless display.
In League One, Ryan Seager started for MK Dons, as they hosted Wigan on the opening day of the season.
Seager turned in a lively performance in his 63 minutes on the pitch, testing Latics keeper Christian Walton from distance in the early stages, before setting up Kieran Agard, who nearly broke the deadlock, but fired just wide.
Seager came close to giving Dons the lead after half-an-hour, but headed just wide, before Wigan’s Nick Powell scored what proved to be the only goal of the game shortly afterwards.
The Saints forward did come close to grabbing an equaliser after half-time, but shot just wide from a tight angle.
In League Two, Olufela Olomola started up front for Yeovil Town, but it proved to be a miserable day for the Glovers as they visited Luton Town.
The afternoon had started well, with Otis Khan giving them a seventh-minute lead, but it went downhill rapidly, as the hosts stormed to a 5-1 lead at half-time, before eventually triumphing 8-2, with Olomola being substituted in the 71st minute.
