Jack Stephens believes the pre-season victory over Sevilla has put Southampton in a great position to start the Premier League season.

Stephens scored the opener as Saints completed their pre-season preparation with a 2-0 victory over the La Liga side at St Mary’s.

“We’ve had enough of pre-season now,” started the centre back.

“It’s been really hard and we’ve enjoyed it, but it’s nothing compared to the season and we want that to start as soon as possible. We are very much looking forward to next Saturday.

“I think the clean sheet against Sevilla is pleasing for me and the team. It gives us something to build on for next week and the season coming forward.”

Stephens’ first-half opener was followed by a late Manolo Gabbiadni strike to confirm victory for Mauricio Pellegrino’s men.

And the 23-year-old stressed the importance of getting back to winning way following the defeat to FC Augsburg.

“Having lost so heavily on Wednesday it was important,” Stephens continued.

“We needed to react to that and make sure we put in a good performance in our last performance to build momentum.

“It’s always nice to get a goal and that’s a bonus. But first and foremost for us as a defence a clean sheet is what we want.”
