Defender Alfie Jones felt Southampton Under-23s fell short of their usual standards in the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League Cup.
A tightly contensted first-half was juxtaposed by a more open second, with substitute Luke Charman’s double the difference.
And Jones says they must regroup quickly in order to bounce back against Chelsea next time out in Premier League 2.
“It’s frustrating because we need a point or a win to top the group which we wanted and now we have to rely on other results. We’ve got to take whatever comes,” said Jones
“We had to go for the goal (at 1-0) to try and get a point and try to push. They’ve caught us on the counter which is disappointing but I don’t think we were good enough today.
“We need to have a good look at ourselves before we go again next week because we want to put things right straight away.”
Jones returned to Radhi Jaïdi’s side at Whitley Park having recently joined the first-team for their training camp in Spain ahead of the EFL Cup final, something which he feels has been highly beneficial.
“It’s been a good experience being around the first-team and learning from the players and the staff. I want to take that into the Under-23s and help everyone out.”
