First years making an impact, says Fleming

Southampton Under-18s manager Craig Fleming has praised his first year scholars for the part they played in the 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Tyreke Johnson netted to complete the victory on 63 minutes at Staplewood Campus, but it was Javen Siu's exquisite opener that the game will be remembered for.

“It was a heck of a goal from Javen,” explained Fleming.

“He has got that in him, technically he is a very good player. I think it took him a little while to settle in, but he’s been outstanding for the last three of four games.

“It takes time for the younger lads because it’s a big step. Some people hit the ground running and are off straight away, but for others it takes time. We are seeing that now because the younger lads have been tremendous.”

Saints have now recorded back-to-back victories in the Under-18 Premier League, following their 2-0 victory over Swansea City last weekend.

And Fleming believes that is much deserved for the performances his side have been putting in.

“It’s good for the confidence of the players,” he continued.

“Though I think the most important thing – and I keep beating the drum – is that the performances throughout the season have been solid.

“But post Christmas we have taken it on a step and been fantastic. During some little patches we may have left ourselves down, but for the most part it has been fantastic.”
