Southampton defender Jack Stephens felt the first goal proved decisive in the 3-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.
Stephens replaced the injured Cédric in the first-half to make his Premier League bow, as goals from Enner Valencia, Leighton Baines and Romelu Lukaku condemned Claude Puel’s side to defeat.
“It’s tough to take. The 3-0 scoreline I thought was a bit harsh because I don’t think it merited how we played,” Stephens reflected.
“We needed that first goal and when they got it we had to start taking a few more risks and we’ve been done on the counter for the second and third goals.
“I don’t think Fraser had a save to make before the first goal and their keeper had one save from Reders (Nathan Redmond) so there wasn’t much in it before the first goal.
“We don’t just want to sit in at 1-0 and be happy to lose. We still want to go out and win the game or at least get a point so we had to commit more men forward.
“It’s not as if we’re miles off it but a couple of little tweaks and we’ll be back on our feet again.”
