Southampton defender Jason McCarthy enjoyed Boxing Day success, as he helped loan club Walsall to a 1-0 win away at Port Vale in League One.
McCarthy played the full game, as the Saddlers kept a clean sheet and secured an important three points that sees them move up to 16th in the table, ahead of their New Year’s Eve visit to Walsall.
Scott Laird’s goal proved the difference, as he netted in the 27th minute at Vale Park.
In League Two, midfielder Dom Gape was involved in a thriller, as his Wycombe Wanderers side drew 3-3 away to second-placed Plymouth.
The Chairboys led after eight minutes, thanks to Scott Kashket, but they were 3-1 down by the 56th minute, following goals from Jordan Slew, Jake Jervis and Yann Songo’o.
Still, Gape and his teammates fought back, with Adebayo Akinfenwa scoring before Myles Weston’s 89th-minute equaliser, as Wycombe extended their unbeaten league run to eight games and ensured they remained sixth in the standings.
In the Championship, Sam Gallagher played the full game for Blackburn, as they lost 2-0 away to Barnsley.
Sam Winnall gave the Tykes the lead after 14 minutes, ahead of Marley Watkins wrapping things up in added time.
The result means Rovers have now lost their last four, leaving them 22nd in the table.
