Claude Puel came away disappointed after his side failed to convert their dominance against ten-man Stoke City into all three points at bet365 Stadium.
Marko Arnautovic was dismissed in the first-half for a reckless high challenge on Sofiane Boufal.
But despite a plethora of opportunity, particularly in the second-half, Saints could not find the cutting edge required to unlock their hosts’ defence and had to settle for a share of the spoils.
“I think it’s a disappointment after the game because it was eleven against ten men and it was an opportunity to try to take three points,” said Puel.
“It was not enough. It is difficult to play against a team with ten players because they didn’t move and for us it was a good possibility with more quality, to find a solution.
“It was important to score one goal because after it was easier to find a solution. We are unlucky with some situations but tonight it was not to enough to win this game.
“We have to learn to play against a team who sits back on the pitch and this is with more quality in our play.”
