Marcus Barnes was delighted after his brace helped to secure an important Premier League Cup victory over Newcastle United.
Barnes was making his first start since a lengthy injury lay-off and netted two headers in the first-half to put Southampton Under-23s in command.
Saints were quickest out the blocks and made their dominance count, before Olufela Olomola sealed the win with a penalty.
“It’s a nice feeling. It’s the best feeling scoring so it’s good to be back in it,” Barnes said.
“Martin and Radhi asked us to come out and start with a high tempo. That’s what we did, we started playing, keeping the ball and putting them on the back foot which allowed us to have space to play.”
The two goals were almost identical, with inch-perfect corners from Thomas O’Connor and Callum Slattery providing the ammunition.
But asked whether he had scored two goals as similar before, the striker was quick to recall a previous fixture.
Barnes added: “I think so maybe a couple of seasons ago against Fulham which were headers at the near post again!
“We worked on the set-piece especially yesterday and I’m just glad it paid off.”
