Radhi Jaïdi was delighted to secure all three points in the Premier League Cup, after the 3-0 success over Newcastle United.
Marcus Barnes scored a brace and Olufela Olomola scored a penalty late in the second-half to leave Saints on six points after three games in the competition.
And Jaidi felt there were lots of positive signs from the side, which they can take forward to try and progress to the next stage.
“I’m very happy with the result. I thought the first-half was really good and there’s a lot of good stuff to show the boys on the de-brief,” said Jäidi.
“There were a lot of crossing opportunities and the set plays got us the win, which is something we’ve been working on every week.
“We set the tempo in the first 20 minutes and created some good opportunities. We were more effective on the left side and that gave us the advantage in the first-half.”
Barnes netted his first goals since returning from injury in a first-half where Southampton showed a great intensity to put themselves in the ascendancy.
Both came from well-worked set piece routines, which was particularly pleasing for Jaidi.
“We’re all pleased for him and happy for him to be back and be around the team," he continued.
“He’s a good lad who has been out for a long period. It’s a good start for him but it’s not strange for him to score goals and he likes to be on the scoresheet.
“It’s something we’ve been working on different combinations and I thought the delivery from Tom O’Connor was great and the timing of the runs were terrific."
