Will Wood is hoping to recreate Southampton Under-23s’ 2014-15 Premier League Cup success, starting with a victory over Newcastle United.
Saints host top-of-the-table Newcastle at Staplewood Campus on Friday night, and Wood was quick to reiterate the importance of progressing in the competition.
“We need to win on Friday,” started the defender.
“We slipped up against Bristol City and got a good result against Swansea, so if we can beat Newcastle then hopefully the rest will follow.
“I was part of the team that won it a few years ago and it’s something you never really forget. It would be really important, not just for me and the others my age, but for the younger scholars to progress.
“It’s a big achievement to win something like that at such a young age, so we should be mindful of winning and going further.”
Wood returned from injury to play for Martin Hunter’s men in their 1-1 Premier League 2 draw with Everton on Monday night.
And the 20-year-old was pleased to return and get 90 minutes under his belt.
“I felt a bit rusty to start with,” Wood continued.
“I had come back from major surgery, had a string of games and then got injured again - so it has taken a while to get my fitness back.
“But I finally got 90 minutes against Everton. I started off a bit slow trying to get used to it at left back, but eventually got back into my flow.”
