Jaïdi: Derby defeat a learning curve

By SFC Media time Mon 31 Oct Derby U23 vs Saints U23

Southampton Under-23s coach Radhi Jaïdi believes his players will learn from their 2-0 Premier League 2 defeat to Derby County.

Saints faced a Rams side that included four first-team players, and Jaïdi feels his men will learn a lot from the experience.

“It was a good learning curve,” he explained.

“Especially for our younger boys. Derby had some good, experienced players who know what to do on the pitch and how to deal with the critical periods of the game.

“We started positively. We kept the ball, we controlled the game and we forced them to play direct, which we controlled.

“But as soon as we started to give away some balls that put us on the back foot and then we conceded two poor goals.”

Saints lost Harrison Reed midway through the first-half, after a tangle saw him go off injured.

Ben Rowthorn replaced him, and Jaïdi was hopeful that the injured midfielder would return to action soon.

“It was disappointing to lose Harry early on,” he contined.

“Especially a player like him, who is so energetic and understands the game in the midfield area.

“We wish him to come back soon and hope he’ll be performing the same with the 23s or first team – hopefully it won’t be long.”
