Captain Alfie Jones is hoping Southampton Under-23s can make amends for their Manchester City defeat when they face Derby County on Monday.
Saints were beaten 3-0 at home to the Citizens in their previous Premier League 2 outing – a result that Jones admits has driven the side in training since.
“We want to put it right on Monday,” he explained.
“It was a disappointing result and performance from us, but we’ve had a debrief to look at what we can do differently.
“We’ve been working hard on the training ground to go over all of the stuff that wasn’t very good in the City game and make it better.
“I think Derby are going to be a very physical team and will look to play, so we need to deal with them first but then we can put our mark on the game.”
As well as taking on extra responsibility as one of the more experienced players in Martin Hunter’s armoury this term, Jones has also enjoyed tastes of first-team action.
Having enjoyed the training camp in Baltimore with Claude Puel's men at the beginning of the season, the young defender is now keen to further his development.
“I’ve added a bit more consistency to my game this season,” Jones continued.
“Now, as one of the older players in the team, I want to try and be a leader for the younger players and help to organise the team on the pitch.
“At the moment I am focussed on putting in good performances for the 23s and then hopefully I can start training with the first team a bit more and continue progressing.”
