Ward-Prowse disappointed not to start year with win

James Ward-Prowse felt Southampton were missing that little bit of luck as they slipped to defeat against Norwich City.

Saints were unable to make the most of a number of opportunities in the first half against the Canaries before Victor Wanyama was sent off.

The midfielder’s dismissal allowed the hosts to find the breakthrough as Alex Tettey found the top corner just moments after the red card.

Speaking after the game, Ward-Prowse told youtube.com/southamptonfc: “It was tough and disappointing on our part. I think it was the ideal opportunity to put right the result we had against West Ham.

“We’re very disappointed in there that we couldn’t turn it around. We had a few chances in the first half and I think we performed well.

“It was a case of getting that little bit of luck with one of the key moments in the game.

“We haven’t had the rub of the green, but hopefully that will come.”

Wanyama’s red enabled the Canaries to find the breakthrough, and Ward-Prowse admitted Saints had found it tough to regroup immediately after the dismissal.

“Victor is an aggressive player and he likes to get around the pitch. It was unfortunate for him that he got sent off,” Ward-Prowse added.

“It’s always difficult, but we coped well after the goal. It was just one of those moments and to be fair, the guy took the goal very well.

“It was a real test of character out there and we can learn a lot from that.

“We have to learn from it – it’s a new year and a new start, but it wasn’t the ideal start. It’s a test of character to come through the bad times.”
