Koeman upbeat after Spurs draw

Ronald Koeman was upbeat about his side’s performance as they drew 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary’s.

Graziano Pellè scored twice, but his strikes were cancelled out by goals from Erik Lamela and Nacer Chadli, as the sides finished level.

It leaves Saints one point and one place behind Spurs with four games of the season remaining, but Koeman felt his side gave it their all.

“I’m proud of the team. A little bit, in a different way than last week, disappointd,” Koeman told youtube.com/southamptonfc. “If you go two times in front in the game you expect to win.

“They punished us for one little mistake with the 2-2 but I’m proud about everyone, all the players. It was a great game of football.

“The support and the reaction of the fans after the game means a lot to what they saw. We played well, we played on our level and they showed great character.

“We were fighting to win the game and we were a little bit unlucky about the header of José Fonte, but how we played today that’s enjoyable for the manager.

“It’s always painful if you get the draw before half-time. It was handball but it was so difficult for the referee to see that. The reaction and the way we played in the second half was very good.”

Koeman was full of praise for the performance of Pellè, as he struck his 14th and 15th goals of the campaign.

“It was a lot of attention in the first goal,” Koeman added, “and the second one was an amazing goal.

“It was brilliant. A great cross from Shane long, and a fantastic header. That was very nice to watch.”

Koeman was pleased to see his side match Spurs all the way, and believes it will go down to the final game to decide where his side finish.

“We know that we can match them,” said Koeman. “You have to show that, the lads showed that level and why we are up in the table.

“It’s still open until the last game but if we continue like this to play at the level we did we will reach our target.”
