Koeman: Stick to our principles against Spurs

Ronald Koeman says Southampton must stick to their principles in Saturday’s game against Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary’s.

His players responded to his call last month to build up momentum at home in their bid to secure a European place, winning their last three fixtures, conceding none in the process.

Former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino brings his Spurs side to St Mary’s on Saturday looking to end Saints’ good run, and Koeman believes it is important his side play their way.

“Normally you think to win the game when you play at home,” Koeman told youtube.com/southamptonfc. “But this Saturday will be difficult. Tottenham is a strong opponent.

“They are one of the big teams in the Premier League but we know we have to play our level to show the qualities and to keep the same focus and organisation in defence.

“That for sure can make a winning game.

“We don’t change a lot. It’s always about a little bit in one or two players maximum about the way how you like to play, maybe in a tactical way about our opponent.

“But I won’t make a lot of changes compared to last Saturday.”

One man that is hoping to be available is Toby Alderweireld, who was stretchered off with a shoulder injury against last weekend, with Koeman in positive mood about the possibility of him being fit.

“It’s positive,” Koeman added. “He trained for the first time today (Thursday) with the rest of the group.

“If there is not any strange reaction about training then he will be fit for Saturday.

“Filip Djuričić is a little longer than we expected ten days ago. He’s still out and the rest of the players are fit to play for this Saturday.”
