Maya Yoshida returned from injury as a half-time substitute in Japan’s 1-0 friendly win over Cyprus in Saitama on Tuesday.
Shortly before the Saints centre-back’s introduction at the break, fellow defender Atsuto Uchida’s close-range strike broke the deadlock with two minutes remaining in the first half.
Yoshida’s appearance was his first since scoring for Southampton in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham back in late February.
Maya will be looking to step up his recovery in the Japan’s two upcoming friendlies ahead of this summer’s World Cup. First for his side are England’s group opponents Costa Rica before a welcoming of Zambia.
The 25-year-old will then be battling for a starting place in the side to face Ivory Coast, Greece and Colombia in Group C of June’s competition.
