Jay enjoying possession game

Jay Rodriguez was delighted to see the game-plan work against Fulham and says he’s relishing his role as part of the playing style at Saints.

Rodriguez got the second goal in Southampton’s 2-0 win over the Cottagers on Saturday evening, as Saints made their best ever start to a top-flight campaign, and the striker heaped praise on the way in which the team went about their latest success.

“We pressed really high and it came off for us,” he told Saints Player. “We worked really hard by winning the ball in good places and creating a lot of chances so it was a really enjoyable game.

“It’s enjoyable because the hunger is there which comes from the pressing and working hard.

“We all enjoy the pressing when we’re creating chances, but the main thing for us is keeping clean sheets.”

Jay notched his second league of the season with a near-post header as he got on the end of Rickie Lambert’s nod back across goal to effectively wrap up the win.

The striker was always confident that his strike partner would lay the ball back rather than take the shot on for himself.

“To be fair, I always thought that he was going to square it for me. It was a great header across and I’m glad he did that for me as it was a great goal.

“It’s always pleasing to score a goal and to play like we did I think was unbelievable, so we’re all very chuffed with it.”

Saints gave themselves the perfect platform to build on with a scintillating first half display, and Rodriguez put that fast, yet composed start down to the professionalism that runs through the squad.

“It was really good,” he said of the opening 45 minutes. “We were very controlling of the game and we created so many chances and the reward is all down to how hard we’ve worked and to the belief which we’ve had from day one.

“We know the performances that we’re capable of and to improve upon for the next game. It’s a great place to be at the moment, and everyone is the camp is enjoying it and loving it.

“It’s great competition throughout the team from the back and up front it’s all a challenge, but it’s a good one and a healthy one because everyone wants each other to do well. It’s the same throughout the team, and there’s a really good atmosphere for us to be involved in.”
