First Team Manager Nigel Adkins says Saints' signing of Gastón Ramírez sends a message to the rest of the Barclays Premier League.
The Uruguayan international was unveiled as a Southampton player this evening following his move to the Club being confirmed 24 hours ago.
And gaffer Nigel is delighted that Saints have been able to entice such a hot prospect to St Mary's.
He told Saints Player: "It underlines the ambition of the Football Club that we've been been able to attract such a talented young individual like Gastón.
"He's got a massive future in the game, so we're delighted.
"He's already talked about the project and the vision that has been set out by the Chairman, Nicola Cortese.
"Everything that we're doing here is very positive at Southampton and this signing underlines the progressive nature that we've got."
Adkins had the opportunity to speak with his new signing at length this afternoon ahead of his unveiling before he jets off to participate in Uruguay's upcoming FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifiers.
And the manager is looking forward to welcoming him into his group over the next fortnight: "We're looking forward to him joining us," he said.
"He'll meet up with the players tomorrow in preparation for the game (against Manchester United), although he obviously can't play.
"From our point of view, it's unfortunate that he's going to go and join the Uruguayan national team.
"We have seven-or-eight players away on international duty now, but we'll all get back together a couple of days before we play Arsenal (on Saturday 15th September).
"We'll all be raring to go for that one."
