Match Report: Saints take a point

Read our recap of today's action here, as Southampton draw with West Ham.

15.58

FULL TIME: Southampton 1-1 West Ham

All over at St Mary's. Romain Perraud's first-half goal was cancelled out by Declan Rice on 64 minutes, but it's a point for Saints that snaps a four-match losing streak.

90’

Three minutes of added time

We're into the additional minutes here at St Mary's.

86’

West Ham United substitution: Michail Antonio replaces Gianluca Scamacca

A double change for West Ham.

86’

West Ham United substitution: Manuel Lanzini replaces Lucas Tolentino Coelho de Lima

85’

Edozie tests Fabianski

Sam Edozie cuts inside nicely from the left and powers a right-footed strike towards goal from about 25 yards, but Lukasz Fabianski is well-positioned to parry the ball away.

83’

Scamacca on target... but Bazunu saves

Gianluca Scamacca got his sights right on this effort, as he latched onto a ball down the inside-left, but his well-struck effort was pushed away nicely by Gavin Bazunu.

81’

Diallo tries his luck from distance

Ibrahima Diallo goes for the spectacular, and he hits a well-struck, swerving and dipping shot from long range, but it's a yard or two over the bar.

74’

Southampton substitution: Ibrahima Diallo replaces Ainsley Maitland-Niles

A rare sight, as Saints make a quadruple change!

73’

Southampton substitution: Samuel Edozie replaces Joe Aribo

73’

Southampton substitution: Stuart Armstrong replaces Adam Armstrong

72’

Southampton substitution: Sékou Mara replaces Ché Adams

72’

Rice shot deflected wide

That was worrying. Declan Rice lines up another shot from outside the box, which hits Mohammed Salisu on its way towards goal and deflects wide. For a moment the crowd thought it might be heading into the same corner he found earlier.

70’

West Ham penalty appeal turned down

The visitors have a pretty weak claim for a spot kick, for a supposed handball against Mohammed Salisu, turned down by referee Peter Bankes.

Rice levels for the visitors

West Ham have equalised, and it's Declan Rice. A smart move works space for him just outside the area and he curls a brilliant, right-footed shot into the far bottom corner.

63’

GOAL

Declan Rice (63’) | 1 1

58’

West Ham United substitution: Saïd Benrahma replaces Emerson Palmieri dos Santos

A first change of the afternoon for the visitors.

52’

Yellow Card for Vladimír Coufal (West Ham United)

Coufal is booked after clattering into Adam Armstrong as he broke forward.

51’

Paquetá strike saved by Bazunu

That's a well hit shot from Lucas Paquetá, who controls a ball on the edge of the D, spins and unleashes a fierce left-footed strike, but Gavin Bazunu dives to his right to push the shot away well.

48’

Scamacca again inches off target

Gianluca Scamacca has missed about four or five chances now that have probably only combined to be about a yard or two total off goal! This latest one sees him flick a cross from the right narrowly over.

47’

Superb defending from Salisu to deny Paquetá

Lucas Paquetá muscles his way onto a long ball over the top, but as he gets inside the area and goes to shoot he's denied by a brilliant block from a sliding Mohammed Salisu.

Second half gets under way

We're back up and running at St Mary's. No change for either side at the break.

First-half action 📸

Check out some of the images from the first 45 minutes of today's game at St Mary's

HALF TIME: Southampton 1-0 West Ham

Romain Perraud's deflected strike after 20 minutes of the match has Saints ahead at the break. An entertaining opening period at St Mary's, with plenty of chances for both sides.

45’

Three minutes of added time

Almost at the break now.

43’

Yellow Card for Kyle Walker-Peters (Southampton)

It's a booking for Walker-Peters, as he slides in late on Emerson. The first caution of the game.

41’

Southampton substitution: Duje Ćaleta-Car replaces Armel Bella-Kotchap

A cruel blow for Armel Bella-Kotchap, who is forced off. Duje Ćaleta-Car is on in place of him.

41’

Elyounoussi tests Fabianski

A beautiful strike from Mohamed Elyounoussi as the ball is laid back to him 20 yards out, but his low strike is saved by a diving Lukasz Fabianski, preventing it from sneaking just inside the post.

39’

Bella-Kotchap down injured

Armel Bella-Kotchap called for help after a tussle with Gianluca Scamacca that led to the previous chance for Lucas Paquetá. He is holding his right arm very gignerly as he walks off and it looks as though he will need to be substituted.

38’

Paquetá goes close

Another close-call for Saints, as Gianluca Scamacca clips a cross to the back post, where Lucas Paquetá heads it back across goal. Fortunately for Saints, it bounces inches wide of the far post.

36’

Saints survive another Scamacca scare

A bit of a scramble in the area following a corner ends with Gianluca Scamacca turning and then seeing his shot deflected just over. Saints manage to then clear the resulting corner, as they keep their lead intact.

Perraud celebrates the opener 📸

Romain Perraud leaps into the air after putting Southampton 1-0 up after 20 minutes.

31’

Adams close to doubling Saints' lead

Almost a second for Saints, as Adam Armstrong nods a loose ball into the box and Ché Adams strikes a fierce, left-footed effort towards goal, but Lukasz Fabianski tips the ball away to his left brilliantly.

26’

Another West Ham effort just off target

The visitors are looking for that equaliser, but Lucas Paquetá's angled shot from 20 yards is over the bar, and Saints keep their one-goal advantage.

24’

Scamacca inches wide again

Phew, another close one! Gianluca Scamacca plays a nice one-two on the edge of the area and then hits a quick-fire shot that flashes narrowly wide of the post.

GOALSCORER 15 Romain Perraud

He scores vs West Ham again!

After his screamer in the FA Cup here last season, Romain Perraud bags another goal against the Hammers. He wins the ball 25 yards out in a central position and hits a low strike that deflects off Ben Johnson and flies into the bottom corner. GET IN!

19’

GOOOAL!!!

Romain Perraud (19’) | 1 0

19’

Scamacca close to a wonder goal

Almost an absolute thunderbolt from Gianluca Scamacca, who turns and shoots from 30-odd yards out. It's a vicious, right-footed effort that swerves in the air and flies inches wide of the post.

18’

Adams denied one-on-one by Fabianski

A huge chance for Saints! Ché Adams does brilliantly to out-muscle Thilo Kehrer and get onto a ball down the inside-right. It quickly puts him in on Lukasz Fabianski's goal, but the West Ham keeper saves his low shot towards the far corner with his out-stretched leg.

Players take the knee before kick-off

As part of this weekend's No Room For Racism match-round, players from both teams took a knee prior to kick-off.

11’

Ward-Prowse corner finds Bella-Kotchap

Another glimpse of an opportunity, as James Ward-Prowse whips a corner to the near post area. Armel Bella-Kotchap gets his head on it, but can only loop it up in the air, with Lukasz Fabianski reaching over a group of players to punch it forward before West Ham complete the clearance.

8’

Adams shoots from 20 yards

Ché Adams with the next effort from Southampton, as he strikes the ball from outside the box, but his low shot is pretty comfortable for Lukasz Fabianski in the West Ham goal. Positive from the hosts again, though.

7’

Elyounoussi denied in the area

A nice little move from Saints ends with Adam Armstrong slipping a clever pass into Mohamed Elyounoussi just inside the left edge of the area. He shifts the ball onto his right foot, only to see his shot well blocked.

3’

Early pressure from the visitors

West Ham earn a corner inside two minutes, and it's a good delivery from Aaron Cresswell, but Saints manage to scramble clear following a knock-down. The visitors keep the pressure on, though, and work the ball to Emerson just inside the box, with his first-time shot flying narrowly wide.
