FULL TIME: Saints 1-4 Man City

The heartbreak continues for Southampton who are beaten by title contenders Man City. Saints held their own in a first half of football that saw them frequently on the front foot but Erling Haaland's opener handed City the only push they needed to go on. A goal from Sékou Mara gave Saints a glimmer of hope, but that was quickly cancelled out as Julián Alvarez netted from the spot. Eight to go.

Theo Walcott earns a free-kick in the attacking half early on in the second half. James Ward-Prowse finds the head of Armel Bella-Kotchap inside the area but he fails to control the ball and it fires high and wide of the goal.

HALF TIME: Saints 0-1 Man City

A late goal from Erling Haaland means Southampton trail at half time at St Mary's Stadium, despite an encouraging first-half of football from Rubén Sellés's men. Still plenty to fight for in SO14. Come on you Saints!

Haaland gives City the advantage

Heartbreak for Saints who concede after an encouraging passage of attacking play. Kevin De Bruyne finds Erling Haaland who makes no mistake this time with his headed effort.

Opportunity escapes

Another golden opportunity slips away for Rubén Sellés's men. Roméo Lavia works his way past Rodri before cutting in Kamaldeen Sulemana, who slices the ball across the goal. He beats Ederson but there's no Saints player there to greet it.

42’

Haaland fails to find the target

A little more fight from the Norwegian who has been kept quiet for a large part of this game. Kevin De Bruyne again the maker of the opportunity, with Erling Haaland towering over Kyle Walker-Peters to get a head to the ball. There's momentary cheers from the away fans who think the ball is in the back of the net, but his headed effort is uncharacteristically off target.

40’

Bazunu denies Haaland

Kevin De Bruyne plays the ball into Erling Haaland who beats Jan Bednarek to the ball but his first touch is poor and it's an easy save for Gavin Bazunu.

39’

Alcaraz clears from the corner

City creep up on Saints and Jan Bednarek is forced to get low and concede a corner. It's another Kevin De Bruyne delivery but Rúben Diaz is beaten by Charly Alcaraz in the area.

37’

Wasted opportunity for Saints

James Ward-Prowse plays the free-kick short to Ainsley Maitland-Niles, the pair play a quick one-two before the Arsenal loanee curls in a wasteful cross into the area, with no Saints player there to receive.

35’

Yellow Card for John Stones (Manchester City)

The England international finds himself in the book for a late challenge on Charly Alcaraz.

33’

VAR Decision: Penalty not awarded for Manchester City [] was confirmed

Calls for handball as Jack Grealish forces James Ward-Prowse to deflect, but the appeals are waved off by Robert Jones and shortly thereafter, VAR.

Silky footwork from Kamaldeen

Beautiful footwork from Kamaldeen Sulemana who gets his way past Manuel Akanji before firing a ball across the six-yard-box. He fails to find the head of a Saints player, but it's clear the youngster is adding a much needed spark at St Mary's.

29’

Haaland yet to find his feet

Man City starboy Erling Haaland has been kept quiet in the early stages at St Mary's, as he goes in for just his third touch of the contest he's dispossessed by Roméo Lavia.

22’

Encouraging signs from Saints

More encouraging play from Saints as Kyle Walker-Peters charges down the left flank and into the area, his cross in is deflected back to Moi Elyounoussi who bends a ball into Charly Alcaraz but it's got a little too much on for the Argentine.

20’

Saints utilising the left flank

A lovely bit of link-up play between Moi Elyounoussi and Kamaldeen Sulemana down the left-flank provides another opportunity for Saints to challenge the City defence but a decisive challenge breaks up the attack.

17’

Kamaldeen runs out of steam

A huge opportunity missed for Saints as Kamaldeen Sulemana finds himself free to hit the counter from Kevin De Bruyne's corner. The Ghanaian international charges the length of the pitch, going toe-to-toe with City's Nathan Ake but the youngster takes it too far and Ederson comes out to make an easy grab.

16’

City in control

There's no doubt that it's Pep Guardiola's side that have controlled the game in the early stages, with the Saints defence being forced into action a number of times. Two corners in quick succession for City, Gavin Bazunu clears the first with a strong punch before Saints are given an opportunity to hit the counter.

10’

Man City building

A loose headed clearance from Ainsley Maitland-Niles falls straight into the path of Erling Haaland as Man City force numbers into the box. It looks dangerous from the visitors before Kyle Walker-Peters makes a sliding tackle to clear the threat.

6’

Bazunu denies Grealish

The visitors are given far too much space to charge forward as the ball is worked from right to left as Ilkay Gündogan lays off Jack Grealish. A vital save from Gavin Bazunu who denies the England international from 15-yards-out.

3’

Alcaraz finds space

Charly Alcaraz slices the ball across the six-yard-box but there's nobody inside the area to tap it home. A positive start from Rubén Sellés's men.

Southampton have always been so tough there, the game we made it to 100 points they were much better than us, we've drawn before. It's tough and I have a feeling tomorrow won't be an exception."

I see a team that wants to do things, wants to work hard. It’s a positive environment and we didn’t have victory in the last four games but we had some good performances, we were close in some games, but we keep going."

Two goals in quick succession from Sékou Mara and Moussa Djenepo ensured Cabarao Cup progression for Saints when the two sides met at St Mary's back in January.

Sold out St Mary's 😇

It's a huge day in SO14 as Southampton play host to Manchester City in the Premier League in front of a sold out St Mary's. Three points would be huge for either side as they compete at either end of the league table. Come on you Saints!
