Stuart Armstrong gave Southampton the lead on 41 minutes with a superb break, started by a vital challenge from Roméo Lavia in midfield. Lavia found Charly Alcaraz who stormed through midfield, found Kamaldeen and his first time cross was tapped home by Armstrong. Newcastle's best threat has come via Anthony Gordon, but the visitors have dealt well with that so far.

Sven Botman challenges Kamaldeen inside the penalty area, prompting some protests, but the referee and VAR wave it away.

WHAT a break from Saints! A superb run by Charly Alcaraz in the middle of the field, he finds Kamaldeen Sulemana out wide. Kamaladeen then hits a first time cross and Stuart Armstrong guides the shot beyond Nick Pope from close range.
