Southampton finally ended their winless run with a convincing away victory over Sheffield United that propelled Saints 10 points clear of the bottom three. Read out report here.
17.30FULL-TIME: Sheffield Utd 0-2 Southampton
The perfect away performance! Goals from James Ward-Prowse and Che Adams, either side of the break, secure the victory. It's been a long time coming, but an excellent performance to return to winning ways.
Yellow Card for John Fleck (Sheffield United)
For a very late challenge on Adams, causing a fracas between both sets of players. It's a naughty one from the Sheffield Utd midfielder.
What a handful
Adams is such a willing runner up top for Saints, brilliantly holding the ball up before releasing Minamino. He tries to play the ball square to an unmarked Armstrong, but it's cut out.
FINAL 🔟
Keep working, Saints! We're into the final stages of this one, Saints continue to lead by two goals. A clean sheet would top the day off nicely! 🍒
What a run! 🤩
He went for glory in the end, and why not? Armstrong powers forward, beating three players before wrapping his boot around the shot. It finished marginally wide of the post, but excellent play again from the Scot.
SOLID 🙌
Forster takes the catch from a Sheffield Utd corner, easing the pressure on the Saints backline. Meanwhile, Redmond comes alive on the break. His shot is saved from a similar angle as Adams's effort a moment ago.
Adams close to the clincher
Saints go close again. The striker is released down the right, taking a big first touch to push the ball out in front and accelerate away from the defender. He goes for the far post, but Ramsdale saved with an outstretched leg.
Yellow Card for Stuart Armstrong (Southampton)
SOOOO CLOSE 😫
Bertrand got forward well on the overlap down the left, creating an overload of players. He fizzed a cross towards Adams, who let it run for Minamino, but the first-time finish was marginally off target.
Bogle fires wide
Fleck crossed towards Bogle, who didn't make the cleanest of connections. Mousset seemed to step in his way, as he skewed the shot wide.
Tella tests Ramsdale
Unlucky from the forward, who has looked lively throughout. He drifted inside before unleashing a shot from 20 yards, with Ramsdale at full stretch to tip it around the corner of the post.
THAT ONE MEANT SOMETHING 💙
The delight on Ché's face following his goal.
Resolute defending 👊
Saints looking solid at the back today, with Bednarek moving into a central position to partner Vestergaard. The home side are beginning to pile on a bit of pressure from wide areas, but manfully defended by the centre-back pairing.
Yellow Card for Nathan Tella (Southampton)
For a late challenge on Ampadu.
You knew the second it left his boot...
Thunderous strike from Adams 🔥🔥🔥
Superb Stu 😇
The cushion down for Adams was a lovely piece of play from the Scot, who has again been one of Saints' standout performers today. A two goal lead feels much more comfortable!
OUT OF NOWHERE 🔥
That really is something special from Ché Adams - the technique, the timing, the power. It's something straight out of the top drawer!! He caught it so sweetly on the half-volley, giving Ramsdale no chance. Lovely chest down from Armstrong to tee up the shot.
GOOOAL!!!
Ché Adams (48’) | 0 – 2
Quick break
Forster got Saints on the front foot from a quick throw out, finding Minamino on the move, but the cross-field pass to Armstrong was slightly behind him. Halting the flow of the move.
Back under way...
Sheffield United get the second half going, having introduced Oli McBurnie from the bench. Saints have scored first 14 times in the Premier League this season, but only won 7 of those games. Got to hold on!
HALF-TIME: Sheffield Utd 0-1 Southampton
So far, so good. McGoldrick had a chance to restore parity right on the stroke of half-time, pouncing on a mistake from Diallo, but Forster saved comfortably. Saints go into the break a goal ahead.
Superb save, Fras 👏
John Fleck delivered a nice cross into the path of McGoldrick, who poked the ball towards goal forcing an instinctive save from the big man between the sticks. McGoldrick was actually offside, but Forster wasn't to know.
Yellow Card for Jayden Bogle (Sheffield United)
For another foul on Tella.
Yellow Card for Ethan Ampadu (Sheffield United)
For the penalty challenge.
PENALTY CONVERTED ✅
Really bright play from young forward Tella, using a turn of pace to beat Ampadu and force the mistake from the Sheffield Utd defender. Prowsey converts with perfect precision from the spot, sending Ramsdale the wrong way.
GOOOAL!!!
James Ward-Prowse (32’) | 0 – 1
PENALTY SHOUT...
Tella breaks forward, his pace beats Ampadu, but he's brought down before he can get the shot away. It's a certain penalty kick. James Ward-Prowse over it...
Different corner routine
Armstrong took it, looking for the run to the edge of the box, but the shot was inadvertently blocked by a Southampton shirt. Meanwhile, Saints go on the attack again...
Tella swipes at the shot
The opportunity presented itself fortuitously to Tella, who snatched at the shot and sent it wide. Ramsdale was caught off his line, had Tella been able to divert the ball on target.
Smart move
Neat interchange down the left channel yields another corner for the home side. It goes deep again, but Forster was blocked off, winning Saints a free-kick. The target is McGoldrick at the back post every time.
Get better soon, Ingsy ❤️
Sheffield corner
It goes deep, with players waiting centrally but nothing really to report there. Saints regain possession with Vestergaard, with neither team able to get a firm hold of the tie yet.
Great to have Taki back 👊
The Japanese international operating off the left.
Tella a nuisance
Bogle bundles over Tella on the far left hand side. Bertrand will again nominate himself to deliver, with Tella the target. He swung at the ball rather too vigorously and mistimes the effort.
Diallo wins a free-kick
In a promising position for Saints, with Bertrand over it. It's floated towards Vestergaard, but it's too deep. Nothing much comes of the free-kick, but the visitors retain possession.
Bright start from the visitors
Stu Armstrong takes up a more attacking position than midweek, as he picked up the ball centrally and motored forwards. The deflected shot lands at the feet of Walker-Peters, but the cross wasn't overly accurate. Good start, though.
