Match Report

Read back HERE how events unfolded at St Mary's this afternoon.

Full-Time: Saints 2-5 Spurs

Well, no-one saw that second half coming. After 44 minutes, Saints were ahead and seemingly in control of the game thanks to Danny Ings great strike across goal.

But up steps Heung-Min Son. His goals either side of half-time knocked the wind out of the Saints sails and another two before Kane made it five helped Spurs to an easy win here at St Mary's.

Danny Ings got his second with a late penalty but it's been a match of two halves which Spurs have come out of the victors.

GOALSCORER 9 Danny Ings

Ings gets his second

Danny Ings has now got two goals and is up and running for the season.

VAR Decision: Penalty awarded for Southampton [] was confirmed

Matt Doherty has been penalised for a handball. Play went on for a while but it's been pulled back, the referee has watched the monitor and it's a penalty.

Tottenham Hotspur substitution: Steven Bergwijn replaces Harry Kane

Kane in on the act

A ball across field finds Lamela who shoots but the save from McCarthy falls to Kane who won't miss from there.

Ralph in thought

It's been a tough second half for Ralph Hasenhuttl as his side have been out-done by Heung-Min Son.

80’

Southampton substitution: Shane Long replaces Ché Adams

The Irishman to get a few minutes at the end.

80’

Yellow Card for Matt Doherty (Tottenham Hotspur)

Moussa Djenepo gets round Doherty but is brought down.

Son makes it four

Saints are caught again in defence and Harry Kane plays an incredible pass across the pitch to feed Son, who has another one-on-one to make four for him and Spurs.

GOAL

Heung-Min Son (74’) | 1 4

Son takes game to Saints

20 minutes to go here and the pace of the game has gone with that third strike. Spurs slow the game down, close the gaps and forcing Saints to shoot from distance.

69’

Southampton substitution: Nathan Tella replaces Stuart Armstrong

Tella makes another Premier League sub appearance after his full first team debut on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup.

Sponsored by Utilita

68’

Yellow Card for Jack Stephens (Southampton)

The centre-half is late on Lamela.

Son gets his hat-trick

He's through  on goal, no one near him, and finishes past McCarthy. It's an outstanding individual performance and he's carried them to this lead.

It's three one-on-ones and three goals for him and Spurs.

Djenepo in the mix...

Moussa Djenepo capitalises on a loose ball, but can't find space to shoot, gives it to Armstrong who is just as cramped for room and hits over.

Saints continue to create more but just can't create a clean effort unlike their opponents.

57’

Chance for Armstrong! but offside

Danny Ings collects the ball in an offside position, but still waltz's past the Spurs defence and pulls back to Armstrong but his effort is saved by Lloris. Wouldn't have counted anyway.

55’

Southampton substitution: Will Smallbone replaces Oriol Romeu

Smallbone replaces Romeu who was on a yellow card

Frustrating for Saints

After taking the lead and being in full flow, Spurs hit a minute either side of half-time to turn the game on its head. Frustrating but Saints showed enough in that first half to be able to get back into this.

51’

Effort by Ward-Prowse

The Captain gets into a pocket of space and gets a shot away but it's easily gathered by Lloris.

Son gives Spurs lead

It's two for Spurs and two for Son. Two shots on target and two goals. It's two minutes either side of half-time as well. Harsh on Saints but Spurs have finished their chances.

Second half underway!

Who can claim the win at St Mary's?

Djenepo voted best player of first half

The winger has played with his usual high energy in the first 45 minutes and has been one of the standout performers. Hopefully there's more to come from him and his team-mates in the next 45!

The Boss!

Who will be the happier of these two? What will Ralph say at half-time? Big moment for both managers.

Harsh on Saints

It's the football cliche that to score just before half time is perfect, but if Saints can just keep playing as they were, they still have a great chance to claiming the three points.

It's been a manic first-half, is there more of it to come?

Half time: Saints 1-1 Spurs

It's harsh on Saints. After both sides have goals disallowed due to VAR, Ings gave his side a deserved lead. It was looking comfortable but Son strikes just on the half-time whistle to levels matter at St Mary's.

How will Saints react in the second half to that late goal? Before that, Saints were looking like the side that finished the 2019/20 season and were back in full flow.

Son levels

Saints couldn't hold on to that lead. Kane plays in Son who finishes across McCarthy. It's not a deserved goal for Spurs but they have been clinical enough to get themselves back into the game.

GOAL

Three minutes!

Not long for Saints to have to hold onto this lead.

44’

Yellow Card for Ryan Bertrand (Southampton)

Ings is off and running!

What a finish this was by Danny Ings! Here's some pictures of the goal and celebrations. We're glad to have these images back! 😍

40’

Yellow Card for Ché Adams (Southampton)

And the striker is booked for his attempt to get to that cross from Bertrand as he arrives late on Lloris.

39’

Saints at full flow

This is the Saints we know from the end of last season. Ryan Bertrand and Moussa Djenepo combine and the full-back crosses but it's met by Lloris.

TEAM 🤝

Ryan Bertrand and Jack Stephens celebrate Danny Ings opener at St Mary's!

GOALSCORER 9 Danny Ings

THIS ONE COUNTS!!!

DANNY INGS! HE IS BACK WITH A BANG! Ball comes over the top, Ings brings it down with his right foot and hits it straight away across Lloris and into the bottom corner.

32’

GOOOAL!!!

Danny Ings (32’) | 1 0

That Djenepo chance

Here's a snap from that earlier chance for Moussa Djenepo. We think he had the beating of Lloris but he didn't have the beating of the post.

30’

Danny Ings making things happen

Ings has the ball, is running at the Spurs defence and instead of shooting, he tries to tee up Ward-Prowse but he overhits the pass and it goes out for a goal kick.

28’

Kane scores! But it's offside again...

Lucas Moura gets down the wing and has the easy task of setting up Kane to score. However, Moura timed his run just too early and is offside.

27’

Djenepo hits the post!

Cross comes in, cleared and it falls to Moussa Djenepo who from outside the area, hits a low shot against the post and Lloris was probably beaten.

Saints should be ahead here and have threatened more than their opponents.

Sums it up.

Che Adams should have Saints ahead and he knows it with that reaction after his latest chance.

Danny Ings did have Saints ahead before VAR put an end to that. Before that, Kane had Spurs ahead but that was disallowed by VAR.

That's just the opening 20 minutes here at St Mary's! What a game so far.

22’

Adams again!

Saints should be ahead! Djenepo does great work on the wing to pretty much walk towards the Spurs goal, he lays it up for Adams who goes past Ben Davies but his shot is blocked by some committed defending from the Welshmen. James Ward-Prowse follows up but Lloris then punches that effort away.

Celebrations halted 😭

Danny Ings reacted well to beat the on-rushing Hugo Lloris and then curl past the keeper into an empty net, but his celebrations were soon stopped. 0-0.

18’

VAR Decision: Goal not awarded for Southampton [Danny Ings] was cancelled

And now Saints have a goal disallowed! Ings beats the offside trap, but there is a handball in the build-up which is spotted by the linesman and then is confirmed by VAR.

16’

GOOOAL!!!

Danny Ings (16’) | 1 0

Adams chance met by Lloris!

Saints best chance fell to Adams but as you can see, a quick reaction from Lloris keeps it 0-0 at St Mary's.

Harry Kane goal disallowed

Biggest moment of the game so far is that disallowed Harry Kane goal after three minutes. Don't think many people even realised Son would be offside, but it's a correct decision by VAR.

11’

Chance for Adams!

Che Adams has a great chance, very similar to his effort against Crystal Palace.

Bertrand whips the cross in, it falls to Adams who hits hard from about 10 yards out and Hugo Lloris pulls off a great stop to push it over for a corner.

6’

Yellow Card for Oriol Romeu (Southampton)

Romeu is battling with former Saint Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and the midfielder goes from behind to try and claim the ball, he gets a touch but also the ankle of his opposing midfielder.

5’

VAR Decision: Goal not awarded for Tottenham Hotspur [Harry Kane] was cancelled

Wow, in the build up to that Heung-Min Son was offside! His run in behind the Saints defence would eventually lead to Kane putting the ball into the net. It's correctly over-turned. It's still 0-0 here at St Mary's.

3’

GOAL

Harry Kane (3’) | 0 1

Djenepo goes down

Moussa Djenepo collides with Matt Doherty and immediately points to his ankle but is back up. Keep an eye on that one.
