Match Report
The unbeaten run has come to an end but it's still been an incredible start to the season for Saints who at one point today were in third. We're back in action next Monday as we travel to Brighton and Hove Albion looking to bounce straight back!
Full-Time: Saints 2-3 Man United
A game of two halves. Saints looked in control at half-time, two goals to the good and United offering little. Then Edinson Cavani comes on.
Cavani claims the three points
Edinson Cavani has been the difference at St Mary's. Rashford whips a cross in and it's another header from Cavani who gets ahead of Vestergaard and looks to give United the three points.
GOAL
Edinson Cavani (+2’) | 2 – 3

Five minutes added on!
Plenty of time to go here at St Mary's...
VAR check...
It's a cross from Wan-Bissaka which hits Bertrand and VAR checks it but it rules it didn't hit the arm of the full back. Corner is then cleared.
Can Saints get another?
It doesn't look likely as the game looks to be slowing down a little with Saints not wanting to concede another. Ward-Prowse however is over a dead-ball and crosses into the box but Lindelof heads it clear.
Saints unable to hold onto lead
Man United have improved massively in this second half since the introduction of Edinson Cavani and at the moment Saints are unable to get the ball out and keep possession in the United half.
Adams!
The striker gets Saints first real chance since the early stages of the half as he brings the ball down and on the turn shoots but it's wide...
Cavani levels for United
It was a great diving header from the United forward but Saints will be gutted to not hold on to that 2-0 lead. There is still ten minutes left here for Saints to try and find the winner...
United level
If someone was scoring next, it was Edinson Cavani. A corner is cleared to Fernandes who shoots but it finds Cavani free in the area who dives low and heads at pace past McCarthy.
GOAL
Edinson Cavani (74’) | 2 – 2

Cavani goes close!
The Argentinian has changed United in this second half and he gets a head on the end of a Aaron Wan-Bissaka cross but luckily it goes inches wide of the far post.
United break McCarthy resistance
It's Edinson Cavani who finds Fernandes free in the area, he has time to turn and shoot low into the net past McCarthy.
GOAL
Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes (60’) | 2 – 1

Cavani hits over!
Fernandes pulls a cross in from the byline and beats the on-stretching McCarthy and the ball finally lands to Cavani but his shot is over for a corner.
In the midst of the block, Bednarek and Djenepo collide throwing their bodies in the way and the Polish defender is receiving treatment...
McCarthy does it again!
Marcus Rashford is through on goal after beating the offside trap but loses in a battle with McCarthy who saves from the England international.
Walcott fancies a goal...
The striker once again takes an effort at the United goal but it's straight at Henderson who collects standing up into his chest. It's been a good start to the half as Saints aren't sitting back on their lead.
Early effort from Walcott
Theo gets the ball, to the right side of the area, and shoots across Henderson but it's easily gathered by the half-time substitute in the United goal.
Second half underway!
Man Utd kicks us off as Saints look to bring home the three points as they lead 2-0!
Together.
If there is one thing that symbolises Saints it's togetherness and that is shown in this picture! A picture that says a lot about this team at the moment.
Half-time: Saints 2-0 Man Utd
These two have Saints ahead at the break! It has been a similar story with the Captain at the heart of the goals from a dead ball situation, firstly a corner for Bednarek to head home before a free-kick of his own.
GUESS HOW HE HAS SCORED!?
IT'S A FREE-KICK SPECIAL AGAIN!!! It's from an angle, just outside the area, is pinpoint inside the post and De Gea gets a hand to it but he can't stretch enough to keep it out as it bundles into the net.
GOOOAL!!!
James Ward-Prowse (33’) | 2 – 0
WHAT A SAVE BY MCCARTHY!
He brings on the chance himself but goodness that's how you make up for a mistake. McCarthy has to save firstly from Greenwood and then the rebound falls to Fernandes who should score but McCarthy comes up so fast that he denies the Portguese midfielder! Incredible.
OFF THE POST!
OH MY! Walker-Peters lets an effort go from inside the area and it deflects on it's way through and hits the outside of the post for a corner...
AND IT'S GONE IN!!!
Bednarek flicks on at the front post and heads in past David De Gea! It was a great delivery by the Captain who delivers in under the nose of De Gea and Bednarek gets their first to flick it past the keeper!
GOOOAL!!!
Jan Bednarek (23’) | 1 – 0
Saints win their first corner
Ward-Prowse delivers a free-kick which is headed behind for a corner kick. It's whipped in by the Captain...
Words from Ralph...
It's not been the start we have been use to in recent games as Manchester United cause problems in the early stages. Saints unable to build possession but in the last minute or two have picked up the tempo in their passing...
Yellow Card for James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)
The Captain is booked for an earlier tackle on Donny Van de Beek. The referee played on from the foul moments ago but he has booked the midfielder retrospectively.
How close!
It's the man you expect, Bruno Fernandes, who unleashes an effort from 20/25 yards that flies past McCarthy and hits the outside of the post for a corner which is cleared.
United on top in early stages
Saints haven't been under extended amounts of pressure but United have had the majority of possession and the only chance of the game so far.
VAR check...
Marcus Rashford goes down under a challenge from James Ward-Prowse in the area but VAR doesn't award a penalty. Play continues...
First chance of the game!
Jannik Vestergaard and Alex McCarthy cross wires and Mason Greenwood pounces on a split second lapse to round McCarthy but hits the side netting. An early sign of intent that Saints get away with. 0-0.
