Saints slip to Everton defeat
In a tightly contested battle at St Mary’s, Southampton were unable to twice come from behind as Everton ran out winners in Saturday's Premier League meeting. Our report.
17.03FULL-TIME: Saints 1-2 Everton
The visitors come out on top as Richarlison's second-half strike seals all three points. Saints threw plenty at it, but are ultimately left empty handed.
Prowsey free-kick
Met by the head of Romeu, but Saints can't benefit. Davies is the latest Everton player to go down - running the clock down.
4 minutes added...
Saints have for minutes of stoppage time for find an equaliser.
Yellow Card for Sofiane Boufal (Southampton)
For pulling back Iwobi.
Richarlison down
Initially the game carried on, but has been pulled back by the referee, with Saints in possession. The Brazilian is now back on his feet, but this episode has taken a while!
DCL shot
Well blocked by Vestergaard on the lunge. Saints weathering a bit of pressure as things stand.
Everton re-take lead
Sidibé crosses and the forward is unmarked at the back post. He connects well with the delivery and fires it beyond McCarthy in one fell swoop.
GOAL
Richarlison de Andrade (74’) | 1 – 2

Causing problems 👀
The winger looking sharp on his return to the Saints XI today!
Yellow Card for Djibril Sidibé (Everton)
For a foul on Djenepo.
Good position
Free-kick Saints, in an ominous position. Won by Djenepo, as he beat Sidibé and the Everton man puts his arm across the face. Prowsey on the resulting free-kick from wide left - beats the wall, well saved by Pickford.
Djenepo barged over
The winger goes down under intense pressure from Mina in the box. Looks to be a foul, referee uninterested. Seemingly so, VAR.
Tosun drags wide
Walcott finds the striker on the edge of the Saints box, takes the shot on early, first time. Drags it wide of the mark.
McCarthy saves
Saints a little hapless there. Bednarek clears the ball as far as Sigurdsson, who tests McCarthy. The goalkeeper palms over the bar, with relative ease, but concedes a corner. Danger cleared.
Atmosphere changes! 📣
It's suddenly got a little louder inside St Mary's. The crowd have lifted the noise levels and Saints are responding. Both Djenepo and Boufal enjoying plenty of the ball.
WE'RE LEVEL!
Sofiane Boufal's introduction has made a huge difference! He beats two blue shirts down the right, fizzes the ball towards Ings who pokes home. Parity restored, and a great start to the second half from Saints!
GOOOAL!!!
Danny Ings (49’) | 1 – 1
Boufal's first involvement
Ward-Prowse works the ball to the substitute on the edge of the area, who takes a touch to steady, before bending an effort towards goal. Plenty of sting, but wasn't enough to beat an alert Pickford.
HALF-TIME: Saints 0-1 Everton
Tom Davies's goal is the difference at the break.
Cédric spots an opening
The full-back had snuck down the left, and was nearly found by Ings, who stretched to work the ball into this path. Tom Davies was on the cover, and got to the ball marginally ahead of Cédric, who otherwise would have been in.
Work rate: 💯
Not quite fallen for him, yet. But Danny Ings is working extremely hard up top, closing down and sniffing out opportunities.
Promising attack
Ings and Djenepo go alone. They were surrounded by blue shirts, but mounted a promising attack nonetheless. Eventually Ings is crowded out, but it feels like these two are the key to a Saints goal.
Djenepo in action
Hasn't seen too much of the ball yet, only in short spells. When Saints regain possession, he's a good outlet.
Digne curls wide
Walcott carries the ball over half way, lays it off. Eventually finds Digne in an advanced position, who cuts inside, before bending an effort way off target. No trouble there.
Davies cross-cum-shot
It looked like an overhit cross, but required intervention from McCarthy, who tipped over the crossbar. Resulting corner taken by captain Digne, but cleared by Armstrong.
McCarthy called into action
Theo Walcott escapes down the right, forces his way past Jack Stephens, but Vestergaard is covering. The winger pokes a shot at Alex McCarthy's goal, which he fields by punching. Danger cleared.
Sigurdsson free-kick
Out-swinging, it narrowly evades Yerry Mina before bouncing awkwardly in front of Tom Davies, who again had nipped around the back. The midfielder connects, but it arrives too quickly to get any direction. Saints need to sharpen up at the back.
Tosun heads over
He really should have done better! He plays a one-two with Theo Walcott, and then connects with the returning pass. Under pressure from Bednarek, the striker heads over from close range.
Fine defensive work from Stephens
The defender took a risk, sliding in on Cenk Tosun with the striker on the attack inside the box. But he timed the tackle to perfection and wins the ball cleanly. Alex McCarthy clears up the scraps.
Djenepo wins the foul
Eventually, the referee rules the way of the Malian. He's being crowded out every time he receives the ball - Everton clearly marking him as a danger. It potentially leaves space elsewhere...
Cédric cross wayward
Nice build up from the hosts. A deft chip finds the feet of Cédric, but his cross misfires. Djenepo beginning to get on the ball, with some effect, but he's fouled. Or so it seemed.
Everton corner
Delivered by Lucas Digne, but cleared well up field by Oriol Romeu. Danny Ings gives chase and Saints are on the attack. Redmond fired it towards Djenepo, but the ball is intercepted. This is better.
Saints settle
A frantic opening. But Saints have settled on the ball now and are starting to find some rhythm. Nathan Redmond nearly finds an opening, but Mason Holgate recovers well to clear.
Davies at the pack post
The corner is whipped in, and not cleared effectively. It breaks, rather fortuitously, to the midfielder who was lurking at the back post, and he heads beyond Alex McCarthy.
GOAL
Tom Davies (4’) | 0 – 1

Prowsey delivers...
Djenepo offers the decoy run, but the midfielder whips the ball centrally. Saints are then caught on the counter, which Theo Walcott quick in the transition. Sigurdsson's eventual shot goes out for a corner...

In the absence of Højbjerg, Stuart Armstrong has stepped into the right wing-back position, while Cédric swaps over to the left. Moussa Djenepo, Nathan Redmond and Danny Ings are the options up top.
