It's all over at the Etihad Stadium, where Carabao Cup holders Manchester City march on in the competition at Saints' expense. Ralph Hasenhüttl's men did show their spirit to finish the game strongly, never giving up on a very tough night, as Jack Stephens's late header offered the travelling supporters something to cheer.
Three added minutes...
We're into stoppage time at the Etihad.
Saints finishing strongly
Saints have showed some spirit here, forcing another corner to keep City pinned back, but Romeu shoots wildly off target and the hosts can breathe easily.
Saints are on the scoresheet
Jack Stephens heads home a James Ward-Prowse corner, as Saints' positive spell towards the end of this game is rewarded with a goal!
GOOOAL!!!
Jack Stephens (75’) | 3 – 1
Stephens goes close
This is easily Saints' best spell of the game, as Stephens gets on the end of a Ward-Prowse corner, but again Bravo is there to preserve his clean sheet.
The substitutes combine...
A positive impact from the two replacements, as Redmond reaches the byeline and picks out Adams with a nice cutback, but the striker's first touch just gets away from him.
So close from Boufal!
The Moroccan works a yard of space on the edge of the box and sends a curling shot towards the bottom corner with his left foot, but Bravo stretches to make an excellent save low to his right, before Long heads over from the resulting corner.
Bednarek denies certain goal
City look set to make it four when Jesus sets up Mahrez with a clever backheel, but Bednarek throws himself in the way to make a last-ditch block.
Agüero gets his second
When Mahrez lines up a shot from the edge of the box, Agüero is already on the move, and the looping deflection drops kindly for the striker to convert from six yards.
GOAL
Sergio Agüero (56’) | 3 – 0

McCarthy denies Bernardo Silva
First big chance of the second half, as Mahrez slips the ball through for Bernardo, who tries to prod it between the legs of McCarthy, but the keeper makes himself big and gets in the way.

HALF TIME: Manchester City 2-0 Southampton
It's comfortable so far for the visitors. Saints have been more solid out of possession, but are carrying very little attacking threat as a result. Nicolás Otamendi and Sergio Agüero are the men on target for the home team, who are on their way to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals as it stands.
One added minute...
Soon Ralph Hasenhüttl will be able to deliver his half-time team talk. What would you say if you were in his shoes?
Foden tries his luck
It's a fierce shot from distance by the youngster, but McCarthy gets both hands behind it to beat it away. He then makes a similar save from Bernardo Silva soon after.
Agüero makes it two
It's a fine team move, as Walker gets on the overlap and crosses for Agüero to tap in an easy finish.
GOAL
Sergio Agüero (38’) | 2 – 0

Agüero hits it wide
The City skipper on the night sends it a couple of yards wide, and Saints remain only one goal behind.
Free-kick on the edge of the box...
There are a couple of players hoping to strike this for City. It's in prime position.
Yellow Card for Oriol Romeu (Southampton)
The first booking of the game goes to the Saints' midfielder.
The pattern of play continues
There may have been a change in the scoreline, but it remains a case of City trying to break down some stubborn Saints resistance. It's wave after wave of attacks.
Otamendi heads City in front
A City corner is worked short to Bernardo Silva, whose cross is headed home by Otamendi from six yards. It's been coming.
GOAL
Nicolás Otamendi (20’) | 1 – 0

McCarthy denies Angeliño again
Another City attack results in the ball running kindly in the box for Angeliño, who smacks it first time, but McCarthy is there to make another save.
Danso makes crucial clearance
Mahrez delivers a dangerous cross from the right, but Danso just gets in front of Agüero to head behind for a corner, which comes to nothing.
McCarthy holds Angeliño's shot
City have been dominant in possession, but still haven't created anything clear-cut. McCarthy does have to be alert on this occasion as his handling is tested by Angeliño's clean strike from 20 yards.
Mahrez hits the sidenetting
The winger latches on to a ball over the top and takes it down in an instant, but the angle is too tight and he can't get his shot on target.
Five at the back for Saints
Saints are starting with three central defenders, with Jack Stephens flanked by Kevin Danso and Jan Bednarek, while Yan Valery and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg are the wing-backs - the skipper is operating down the left side.
